Derrick Whiting: Committed, Connected, Community-Driven

Derrick Whiting, a dedicated advocate for Baltimore City, has garnered respect for his tireless efforts to improve the community. With a background in public service, human services, and community advocacy, he brings extensive experience to his role as a candidate in the vibrant 40th District.

His journey reflects resilience, particularly as a returning citizen who has firsthand experience overcoming challenges associated with the criminal justice system, emphasizing the potential for resilience and second chances.

Beyond his professional role, he leads the Flowers Whiting Initiative, providing community-based outreach and training to support returning citizens' reintegration into society. Derrick's commitment to enhancing the lives of Baltimore residents is further demonstrated through his appointment to the Baltimore City Democratic State Central Committee and his fellowship at the Vera Institute of Justice, where he works on Reshaping Prosecution Initiatives.

Civically, Derrick is active across various boards and commissions, including the Baltimore City Public Safety Advisory Commission, the No Boundaries Coalition Leadership Advisory Council, Baltimore City Trauma Informed Taskforce, and Youth Empowerment Society.

His service in the Maryland Army National Guard, including deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and involvement during the Freddie Gray uprisings , showcases his dedication to community service, even in challenging times.

Derrick's journey in public service began with roles at the Social Security Administration and FEMA, providing valuable insights into social safety nets, disaster response, and recovery efforts. These experiences inform his passionate advocacy for his district's residents.

With a B.A. in Human Services Administration from the University of Baltimore and currently pursuing a Master of Social Work at the University of Maryland-Baltimore, Derrick continues to deepen his expertise in addressing complex social issues.

I am running again for the State Central Committee in the 40th District to serve my community and advocate for positive change at the state level. With a deep understanding of our district's challenges and opportunities, I aim to be a strong voice for our interests and concerns.

My candidacy is rooted in grassroots organizing, community engagement, and a commitment to transparency within the Democratic Party. By collaborating with residents, organizations, and elected officials, I seek to address key issues such as public safety, education, economic development, and healthcare.

Ultimately, I believe that by serving on the State Central Committee, I can help shape a more inclusive and responsive Democratic Party that prioritizes the needs of all Marylanders. Together, we can work towards a brighter future for our community and our state.

Why I am running……

My Commitment To The Issues

Strengthen Democratic Turnout and Voter Engagement

  • Register new voters across Baltimore City, increase turnout in under-resourced neighborhoods, and ensure every community has a voice in local and state elections.

Support Progressive, Community-Focused Candidates

  • Help elect Democrats who fight for Baltimore’s children, families, seniors, safety, justice, and opportunity while building a bench of future leaders from our own neighborhoods.

Stand Up for Core Democratic Values

  • Fight for safe and healthy communities, good-paying jobs, equitable schools, youth programs, affordable housing, tenant protections, environmental justice, clean air, clean water, and climate resilience.

Ensure Diversity and Representation

  • Support and uplift Black women, underrepresented neighborhoods, and community leaders while building a Central Committee that truly looks like Baltimore.

Expand Year-Round Community Outreach

  • Move beyond election-season contact by building real relationships block by block with tenants associations, churches, schools, neighborhood groups, and local organizations.
